Our Bar/Bat Mitzvah program

Being a Bar/Bat Mitzvah student at Temple Beth Israel involves a great deal of new experiences and opportunities for the whole family to work together towards this fantastic life transition.

The focus of the program is the purpose of becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah and the active role the individual can play within the the Jewish community.

Accordingly the student leads part of the service on the day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. In addition to this, the student learns to chant the parasha (Torah portion) and they prepare a D'var Torah (a teaching) about it to present to the community.

To begin studying for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students need to have some background in Jewish learning (either through a Jewish day school or at our Matan after-school program). Please contact us for more information.

Bookings for a Bar/Bat mitzvah can be made for specific dates years in advance so we advise families to contact us as early as possible to discuss their plans.

Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at TBI is a special experience and wonderful moment in family life-not only for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah service itself, but the many moments of discovery and insight. These are the kind of moments of which great Jewish memories are made.

B'mitzvotav program

In 2008 TBI introduced an innovative learning and social action program, ‘B'Mitzvotav'. As students prepare to take their places as a responsible Jews, ‘B'Mitzvotav' allows them to experience new levels of understanding about Jewish values and responsibilities. The program challenges students to think about the ways they interact with each other, with themselves and with God. 'B'Mitzvotav' engages students in exciting ways to express their Judaism and be involved beyond their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Students study with their private tutor starting between 10-12 months prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Lessons take place at TBI or alternately by arrangement with the tutor and family.

Our B'mitzvotav program booklet is available for download here.

The B'mitzvotav answer book which students can use to record their answers is available for download here.
