Rabbi Fred Morgan, Senior Rabbi
Rabbi Fred Morgan was born in America and studied in New York and in Cambridge, England, before becoming Lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of Bristol in the U.K. His field was the religions of India, specializing in Hinduism, Jainism and South Asian Buddhism.
After some years he entered the Leo Baeck College in London, from which he received rabbinic ordination in 1984. He served as rabbi of North West Surrey Synagogue for 12 years. During this period he also an Adjunct Lecturer in Midrash and Contemporary Jewish Thought at the Leo Baeck College. In October 1997 he was awarded the title of Honorary Fellow from the Leo Baeck College.
He became heavily involved with interfaith work and with Jewish outreach. Rabbi Morgan was made an Honorary Associate Rabbi of the Sim Shalom in Budapest, Hungary, in recognition of his support of the new Progressive Jewish community over many years of working visits to Budapest.
In 1997 Rabbi Morgan accepted the position of Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth Israel
in Melbourne.
He is Honorary President of the Victorian Council of Christians and Jews and continues his interest in interfaith work, actively participating in the work of the Council, creating and maintaining links with the Islamic community, and sitting on the City of Port Phillip Multifaith Network. Over the years he has introduced Judaism to hundreds of mixed faith groups, and he feels that this is one of the most enriching and beneficial aspects of his rabbinical work.
Rabbi Morgan has twice served as Chairman of the Council of Progressive Rabbis for Australian, Asia and New Zealand. He has a strong passion for social justice and regularly speaks and writes on social issues facing the Jewish and broader Australian community.
Rabbi Morgan is married to Sue, a social worker and pastoral care coordinator, and they have three grown children.
